The Importance of Music Education

by John Anthony

The universal language of music is one of life’s treasured gifts. In every corner of the world, this art form, whether a symphony with powerful ambitions, a simple torch song that vows true love or an insightful rap that reveals truth, everyone can relate to music.

Learning to play an instrument is not only a source of fun and in some cases, prosperity, it’s a creative outlet that helps us express ourselves. Even if the pleasure of playing an instrument is for our ears only, the benefits and satisfaction will last a lifetime.

Music Education=Brain Power

From the rapid brain development of early childhood, through school-age years and on into adulthood, the benefits of music education have been widely recognized. Dr. Frances Rauscher, psychologist at the University of Wisconsin at Oshkosh, has proven that musical training can dramatically enhance a child’s abstract thinking skills and spatial-temporal ability – skills necessary for mathematics and science. Wow.

Music and Wellness

In a study led by Dr. Frederick Tims of Michigan State University, music therapy, administered through interactive sessions, proved to significantly increase the level of melatonin, which is linked with sleep regulation and believed to influence the immune system.

You don’t have to be a doctor to understand the effects of a favorite piece of music as it relates to mood and anxiety. Simply, a familiar melody and meaningful lyric can interrupt an otherwise stale routine with a nostalgic or sentimental thought. I’m sure we’ve all enjoyed a golden oldie on the radio that helped us get through a bad day. Maybe it brought a smile to our face or sparked a warm feeling for someone special.

Balance

Ahhh…that elusive state we strive to attain. Family, work, school and social calendars makes balance a tricky proposition. Our right brain functions, responsible for insight, art awareness, imagination and yes, music awareness, needs to be exercised to help us achieve this balance in our lives. ‘So pick up that guitar and play…’

Music helps us relax, escape and sometimes even discover things about ourselves. I hope you find the music in you…
